Area Legislators Distribute Free Winter Jackets to Local Veterans
Bellingham - On January 15th, 2022, members of the Massachusetts Legislature joined arms with the Massachusetts Military Support Foundation (MMSFI) at the Bellingham VFW Post 7272 for the foundation’s annual Coats4vets program. This year, over 50 new winter coats were distributed to area veterans at no cost. This initiative was made possible by the generous sponsorship of the Ocean State Job Lot Charitable Foundation.
In attendance to help with the distribution were State Representatives Mike Soter (R-Bellingham), Jeffrey Roy (D-Franklin), Shawn Dooley (R-Norfolk), Joseph McKenna (R-Webster), and Brian Murray (D-Milford). This legislative delegation along with State Senator Ryan Fattman teamed up to identify and advertise the program to the veterans in their districts.
“This is one of my favorite days of the year,” commented State Representative Michael Soter. “From ensuring these men and women have a warm jacket to a roof over their heads, we must take care of our veterans and provide them with the resources they need. I was delighted to take on this project with my neighboring colleagues.”
“I love that our community comes together and helps those in need, especially for our veterans who have given so much. I was so happy to meet so many amazing people and glad I could stand there with my colleagues and make a small difference in someone’s life - after all, that’s what public service is really all about,” commented State Representative Shawn Dooley
"The Coats4Vets program is a great way to keep our veterans warm and I was happy to team up with my area colleagues to make it happen in our community," said Representative Jeffrey Roy (D-Franklin). "On a particularly cold day, it was nice to see so many veterans stopping by to pick up their new coats and share some stories about their military experiences. It was a great way to honor their sacrifices and show them that the community remembers their service and is committed to keeping them comfortable."
“Regionalizing efforts with my area colleagues from the House of Representatives and working with the Massachusetts Military Support Foundation was a great way to distribute new winter coats to as many local veterans, active-duty military and their families as we could,” said Rep. Brian Murray (D-Milford). “It was particularly timely given our recent weather conditions and a practical way to help our veterans, as well as express thanks for their dedication and service on behalf of all of us.”
"It was fitting that temperatures were in the low teens to remind us all how important a warm coat is during these cold winter months. I appreciate the great work of the Mass Military Support Foundation and was glad to partner with the efforts of my colleagues in the region to be able to extend the Coats4Vets program to Veterans in the towns I serve. This is a small but meaningful token of gratitude and appreciation for our veterans and for their sacrifices,” commented State Representative Joseph McKenna.
The Massachusetts Military Support Foundation’s mission is to provide programs, services, and goods that help satisfy critical needs and enhance the well-being and quality of life for Veterans, active-duty military, and their families in Massachusetts. The non-profit is a multi-faceted organization that sponsors various programs such as Food4Vets, Lawyers4Vets, Coats4Vets, and Operation Backpack. In addition, the foundation operates two brick-and-mortar “empowerment centers” that offer food assistance and assistance for young children. Each of their programs is designed to have maximum impact on the many issues Veterans and active-duty Military face.
