Mass Surgeons Honor Representative Dooley

October 31, 2019

Earlier this month, the Massachusetts Chapter of the American College of Surgeons (MCACS) honored Representative Shawn Dooley with its John Collins Warren Award. The group applauded Dooley for his efforts on behalf of the state's trauma system and his work to ensure patients have access to safe, high-quality surgical care.

Dooley, also an on-call firefighter and EMT in Plainville, is a major supporter of Massachusetts’s Stop the Bleed movement, which aims to eliminate preventable deaths by equipping bystanders with the necessary tools to control serious bleeds before first responders arrive. Dooley’s efforts, highlighted by his legislation, H.1870 An Act relative to requiring trauma kits in public buildings, seek to address this issue by requiring all public buildings in Massachusetts to house basic bleeding control kits, containing a tourniquet and other necessary tools, and a person trained to use the kits much in the same fashion as the state’s laws concerning AEDs.

Dooley has also brought the Stop the Bleed movement into his district, where he has personally donated bleeding control kits and the necessary training to his schools. “I am beyond humbled to receive this award” said Dooley. “I know that there are so many other important people who I have worked with along the way that are more deserving, but it truly is an honor. Collaborating with the American College of Surgeons and hospitals across the state has been a deeply rewarding experience. I look forward to continuing to fight with them on this issue, and I am eager to work on future health-focused projects with them.”
